Fanfic: In the Shadows

Title: In the Shadows
Fandom: Harry Potter
Characters/Pairing:Harry/Hermione
Rating/Warnings: FRT, but that's being super cautious.
Summary: It was unspoken, until now.
Author's Note: [profile] sunrunnersioned requested a happy H/Hr fic with a dash of smut. Unfortunately, I missed the mark by a few miles. I didn't kill anyone, and there is UST, but I don't think it can be called happy. I will still work on that lighthearted piece, but it may take a bit longer. Hopefully this will tide you over until my happy muse comes back :)

Thanks to [profile] lady_of_scarlet for the beta!

"Do you ever wonder, Harry?" It's whispered, but his breath catches at her words.

He looks at her, forearms resting on the railing, eyes forward, searching the night. The full moon paints everything silver where shadows do not lurk, and Hermione is silhouetted by its light. As if in answer to her question, he blinks, and reality disappears.

His arms slide around her waist pulling her back flush against him. Her hair smells like warm vanilla, and he breathes it in before she turns in his embrace. His hands never leave her body, and the friction as she moves sends his blood rushing south. She molds herself to his front, breasts pressed firmly against his chest, as though it's the most natural thing in the world. Fingertips find their way into his unruly hair as dark eyes look into his. His mind empties as he is swallowed in their depths. He feels her breath against his mouth and an unseen force pulls him in. His eyes slip close as their lips meet. Everything is consumed by what he feels, until they are all that's left.

"Yes," he exhales, as he is deposited back in the present. He finds her knowing eyes boring into him with their intensity. Her palm comes up to rest against his cheek and he leans into the warmth.

"Me too." Her words reverberate through his entire being as they are spoken. She leans in and places a barely-there kiss to the corner of his mouth. His hand covers the one pressed against his cheek and he fights the need to turn his head and press his lips against hers. She pulls away, but only slightly. Their breaths mingle as they try to control the flood of emotion they have unleashed.

He thinks, in another universe they made different choices where they didn't have to walk away. In this one, they always do.

His hold on her hand tightens, but he finds the strength to pull it away, but not before his lips brush against the tops of her curled fingers. She takes a step back, and her hand slips through his. He feels the air move as she walks past; the sound of a door opening and closing rings hollow in his ears. He stares out into the night as the shadows darken and once again cover the truth.
